Got the pool at my house cleaned out and in good working condition again. What a luxury.

I’m so fucking tired of having an incompetent narcissist fraud as a president.

So it’s been about a week since I deleted my social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Reddit, in that order), and I’m feeling good about the decision.

Are there benefits to having social media accounts? Yes. You can talk directly with lots of people outside of your social circle or network. You can promote your work to your followers there, and possibly gain more followers and more attention to your work.

But there are downsides too. For me, social media was a massive drain on my time and attention, and also a big source of stress and anxiety. Keeping up and paying attention to everything that everyone is posting felt like a full time job, and I’m not disciplined enough yet to limit myself to only 15 minutes a day or something like that.

I’m more interested in spending my time and attention on things outside of social media: Personal development, fitness, reading books, fixing up my family’s house, quality time with friends and family, being creative, etc.

There’s two books I’d like to recommend if you’re interested in learning more about the ideas that guided my decision:

  1. Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport (I’d also recommend his book Deep Work as a companion piece to this book)
  2. Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now by Jaron Lanier

Now for a thinking prompt: If you were told that you had a year left to live, would you still use social media?

Social media is exhausting. I’ve deleted my Facebook account, and removed all the posts from my Twitter and Instagram accounts. I’ll only use them to post updates related to my podcast moving forward. Social media is a drain on your time and attention, two of the most valuable things we have. I don’t want to give them away for free any more.
